Please refer to 'Search Tips ' below for an explanation of how to use each field.
Search Tips
The advanced feature allows you to search across multiple fields of the document database. As with the basic search, wildcards are already incorporated into the search fields and quotemarks and boolean operators will not work. The advanced search is also case-insensitive. Any fields not required can be left empty.
Document Reference
This field will allow you to enter either the entire reference (e.g. wo 188/112) if you know it, or just part of it. For example, entering "wo 188" will find all the documents in that class in the database. Entering just "195" will find all WO 195 documents, but also WO 142/195, whereas "/195" will return only the latter reference. The Document Reference field should normally be left blank if using the Government Department list (see below).
Government Department
This drop-down list allows one department to be selected. If using this feature, you do not need to enter any data in the Document Reference field, unless, for example, you want to search for "Porton Down" and filter it by searching for "/195" as part of the individual document number.
The Home Office and War Office have been broken down into their respectives departments and headings - to include them all in your search, select the "Home Office" or "War Office" choices.
Subject Heading
This field is self-explanatory.
Keywords
These two fields allow you to combine search terms/phrases. For example, entering "general service respirator" in the first field, and "haversack" in the second will return more results than just typing "general service respirator haversack" into one field.
The AND/OR/NOT option
This drop-down menu allows you to include or exclude the terms in the second keyword box.
Year
These boxes can used singly or in combination. To find a single year, enter it in both boxes. To find matches between two years, (e.g. 1939 and 1945), enter 1939 in the first box and 1945 in the second. To find all matches before a particular year, enter it in the second box, leaving the first blank. Do the reverse for matches after a specific year.
