Notes: Published in March 1938, this second edition of Handbook No.1 included a description and photographs of the General Civilian Respirator, the production of which had reached a stage where issue in an emergency was possible. The section on gas-proofing refuge rooms and buildings was omitted from this edition, and the reader advised to refer to Handbook No.6, 'Air Raid Precautions in Factories and Business Premises', for information on this. This copy was printed in July 1938 in hardback; another copy of the same edition printed in the following October is a paperback. Some photographs from this edition were later used in Protection Against Gas and Air Raids Pamphlet No.2. See also:
